G20 protest death officer to appear in court

PC Simon Harwood to face murder charge in death of Ian Tomlinson during the G20 protest in April 2009

Scotland Yard officer accused of killing homeless newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson during protests of the G-20 will appear in court on Monday.

PC Simon Harwood, of Carshalton, south London, will appear before City of Westminster Magistrates Court charged murder.

Tomlinson, 47, collapsed and died on the periphery of events in central London in April 2009 after being beaten by a police baton and pushed. Harwood was accused by death after Keir Starmer, Director of Public Prosecutions considered the verdict of a jury's investigation of illegal logging.

Tomlinson death was the subject of intense controversy after New York Business Christopher Jaunie delivered video images taken at the event at the Guardian.
